Digging Cotton Jones

cotton_jonesI’ve been listening to this Cotton Jones record a lot lately. Really nice 60’s-ish groove with guy/girl vocals. Almost like a rootsier Doors at times, but I’m sure the band wouldn’t like me saying that.

Perth County Conspiracy (does not exist)

perth1

This was an unexpected find at the Salvation Army. I was intrigued by the plain white sleeve and the bizarre inserts, so I picked it up for 50 cents. I did some research and apparently the album is an independent release by a group from Stratford, Ontario named ‘Perth County Conspiracy (does not exist)’. This album, ‘Mushroom Music’, is made up of live recordings from 1969 when the eleven of them toured around Ontario in an old school bus. I’m guessing they were some sort of commune/hippie collective judging the other flyers included - one for a coffee house, the other for their handmade childrens’ toys workshop.

Musically, it’s not quite the psych-folk gem I was expecting, but there are a handful of great tunes. Some are a little too hippie for my personal taste. You’ll pay about 100 bucks for this on eBay, but it’s a nice, rare piece of Canadiana to have in your collection.

Townes Van Zandt Re-releases

I’m not sure why I hadn’t heard Townes Van Zandt until 2008. It’s a shame really… especially since I’m completely into 70’s singer/songwriter stuff. I’ll blame my ignorance on the fact that Townes’ albums have been next to impossible to find. That is until Fat Possum Records starting re-releasing these gems. So far, I’ve picked up Flying Shoes and Delta Momma Blues and now I’m obsessed. You can most likely find these at your local vinyl shop or from www.fatpossum.com.

Don McLean : American Pie

Found this beauty at a pawn shop - it’s in mint shape. The songs are hit and miss - not everything can hold up to American Pie the song I guess.
